When I retired from teaching after 36 years I was able to make painting my main occupation. I am largely self taught, but recently courses and workshops led by accomplished artists have guided me through  different techniques and helped me to develop a style of my own. My paintings are largely figurative and impressionistic with occasional leanings towards the semi abstract. Interpretations of landscape form the subject matter of most of my work. A keen walker, I have a close affinity with particular areas of the English countryside, notably the Wessex Downs and the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. I begin by depicting the identifiable topography of a chosen landscape, then allow my imagination and personal responses into the scene with the aim of creating a sense of energy and drama. I alternate between small-scale more restrained formats and larger canvases with bold skyscapes.

Of all the mediums I have tried it is oil paint that has totally seduced me. With its luscious, sensuous texture, blending qualities and forgiving nature I do almost all my work in oil.  As paint is applied to a surface it takes on a life of its own. There is a gentle interplay between commanding the medium and being led by it. When I paint I am almost unaware of time passing and feel totally immersed.

I am indebted to the teachers who have led the courses and art groups I have taken part in. Equally I am fortunate in having a supportive family to spur me on. With their unstinting encouragement and that of my friends the act of painting has become an indispensable part of my life.
